Interesting Fact

It takes about the same amount of time to get new license plates in Wyoming as it does in Minnesota. The difference is, in Minnesota, most of the time is spent waiting in line. The DMV there is very busy, and it takes forever to get to the window. In Wyoming, you get to the window right away, but there's a LOT more paperwork. First you have to go to the county treasurer, they give you paper that you take over to the clerk of courts to get a new title. Wyoming requires that you get a new title for a vehicle you bring in the state. But to get a new title, you have to have someone in the sheriff's department do a VIN inspection. So you go then have to go to the sheriff's department. Once you have the VIN inspected, you go back to the clerk, and get your new title. With your new title in hand, you can go back to the treasurer's office and get your new plates.

At least in Wyoming you get more exercise in this process than in Minnesota.

i bet it's a heck of a lot cheaper too! I can't believe how much tabs cost here on newer cars.

i have a funny picture in my head of a sheriff in wyoming inspecting a VIN number. brown hat, brown pants and a lot of crack. lol.

Wyoming doesn't have income tax, so they actually make up for it in car tabs. A new car is supposed to be about $200. Of course I drive a 12 year old car, so I wouldn't know first hand.

that's it, I'm moving to Wyoming.
no income tax??? does thermopolis need copy writers or technical writers? or a weirdo that goes around and corrects people's grammar?

I bought a new car a few months before moving to MN from MI in 2001. I paid $283 for tabs in MN. I still pay $100 every year and it's 6 years old!!!

The sales tax on a car in MN is crazy too. Word of warning. If you buy a car in, say, SD where the tax on a car is 3.5% and you live in MN where it's 6.5%, don't forget to have the tax rolled into the loan if you don't have the cash available! We wound up paying around $1000 for tax, title, license, etc when we bought the van :(

South Dakota doesn't have income tax either. They have a high property tax to make up for it. But property is much cheaper than Minnesota, so it's still not bad.
