Way of the Open Hand

I went to my first Karate Class out here yesterday. It felt really good to get back into it. It was a good mix of refresher and new concepts. A lot of it was new ways to think about stuff that I already knew. I haven't done martial arts in almost three years, so my body is definitely not used to it. I'm very sore today. I've got a pretty nasty mark on the top of my foot where I hit the bag with a roundhouse kick.

Sarah was reading through some of the material. She saw the part that says I need to be able to break 4 inches of ice for every 50 lbs of my weight. (It's part of this system's black belt test). I had to re-assure her and let her know that it would be a while before I do that. I do get to keep my black belt that I've had, and get to work towards my second degree.

The style is called American Eagle Karate. It's a freestyle system. I've done both freestyle and hardstyle systems in the past, and I definitely prefer freestyle. It just makes more sense to me.

One final thing about it: the schools motto is something I think should be used in every martial arts school, and I've never heard it before. "A black belt is a white belt who never quit."

holy crap - 4" per 50lbs... do they want you to shatter the ice or do they want the ice to shatter your hand? i better lose some weight before considering karate i guess. oof.

how many pounds does your hand need to be? can most of the weight be there?

confuscious say: in karate you learn enough patience for the ice to melt so you don't break hand. gaze into the light and meditate on that truth.

Soft styles are pretty cool. Your getting into the karate is making me think I should go check one out.

Yea dood. You're working a standard 8-5 now. That was our biggest problem with doing martial arts back at the geeksquad.
